Two weeks backpacking in Italy

Italy was one of our favourite European countries for backpacking, despite its reputation as an expensive travel destination. The street food was fantastic, the cost of hostel accommodation is comparatively low, and there is a great balance of big cities, small towns, and beautiful nature.

Touring the Danakil Depression, Ethiopia

The Danakil Depression is an incredible place to visit. The hottest place on earth, it’s home to vast salt flats, strangely beautiful sulphur vents, and a (very) active volcano. A two night, three day tour is the perfect amount of time to see it all.

What to do and where to eat in Moshi, Tanzania

Moshi was one of our favourite places to visit in Tanzania. Located at the foot of Mt Kilimanjaro, it’s a happy little town, with good food and beautiful nature. Most people stay in Moshi on either side of their Kili climb, but even for those who aren’t doing the hike (like us!), there was still…

Three days in Sigiriya

I didn’t know much about Sigiriya before we went there. I knew where it was located – in the heart of Sri Lanka’s rainforest – only because I had looked up the bus route before we went. Sigiriya is famous for ‘Sigiriya Rock’ or ‘Lion Rock’ – a well photographed giant rock that seems to just spring up out of the surrounding forest, with the old foundations of a giant palace on the top. But after visiting Lion Rock, and let me tell you, it’s the least of what Sigiriya has to offer.
